A long trip, for New Zealand, we had seven hours driving in front of us. It was a spectacular day at home as we left – bright sunshine, warm temperatures, the best day of the year so far. There were a lot of stop-start sections, the road construction and maintenance crews rushing to get everything done before the great New Zealand Christmas Shut Down and Summer Holidays, when it feels as if the whole country is moving. We beat the rush, but not the rain, which came down from the north. Still, we made it safely, and received a warm welcome in the wet north.
